We are a week into the new year and one of your resolutions  is most likely to find a new job in 2011. Where do you start?

The internet has made it easier to find new job openings and research companies. Popular job search engines like Monster, CareerBuilder, Indeed, Dice, LinkedIn, and Craigslist provide job seekers a variety of job opportunities. Today you can keep track of your account using your mobile phone using their free apps.

 Social Media

Twitter

You may be reluctant to sign up for a Twitter account, and you don’t need an account to search for jobs. On the Twitter.com home page you can enter words into the search box.

The search results you get back are a result of tweets with hashtags, which are words preceded by the number sign (#jobs).  You can make it specific to “Accounting jobs” and the search results are updated live.

LinkedIn

It’s important to update your LinkedIn profile. Update your picture, jobs/titles, summary, etc. Add people to your network. Networking helps you where Monster and other websites can’t. That is to say, you make connections with people that work somewhere, recommend you or provide information about their jobs.

Resume

Some websites may ask you to upload your resume in pdf format to avoid viruses. On Word 2007, you choose the option “Save As” a PDF instead of .doc or .docx.

The essential purpose of an evaluation is to assess the employee’s overall effectiveness in regards to the organizations goals and objectives for the month, quarter, and/or year. Along the same lines, it is designed to assure the company they have right people working for them. As a result, an organization is able to control their company by measuring its success and failures based on the results.

Helpful

Although the performance review is used mainly by superiors, the person being reviewed benefits from the review as well. Depending on how the review is done, the results may cause the employee to feel feelings of accomplishment, personal growth, and self-worth. Similarly, reviews with unexpected results reflect poorly on the salesperson self-worth. It is important for each individual to take responsibility for his or her transgressions or failure to meet the organization’s goals and objectives. A great review can lead to promotions, bonuses, you name it! You take control of your own career when you transcend your supervisor’s expectations.

Scary

Those who oppose performance reviews argue that they are flawed. They may believe that their review has some biases. Issues with co-workers or team, for example, may be a reason to fear what they have to say in regards to your work ethic although you feel you have done the best you can. Another reason to fear evaluations is related to the fear of being fired. Donald Trump does it for entertainment, but when your boss does it.. it’s strictly business.

It is what it is…

Every member of the organization should be reviewed in order to ensure success, improve and continue to innovate. During a tough economy evaluations become more significant to managers because as Jim Collins would say you want to have the “right people on the bus, and the wrong people off the bus.”

The state of the U.S. economy is always on the news, but recently there have been articles pointing to a double-dip recession. I haven’t heard of anything good related to double-dipping; so, what’s in the future for job seekers?

Pro-Tem Solutions has been posting new jobs consistently during the past couple of weeks. Take a look at our website www.pro-temsolutions.com and you will see that there are plenty of jobs out there. We’re not the only ones who disagree with the media’s negative economy reports.

The June 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):

Within professional and business services, employment continued to increase in temporary help services (+21,000). Employment in temporary help has risen by 379,000 since a recent low in September 2009. Elsewhere in professional and business services, management and technical consulting (+11,000) and business support services (+7,000) also added jobs over the month.

It is also important to note that during the Third Quarter there’s in an increase in hirings. Most companies want to meet their goals by the end of the year. This is good news for job seekers.

As a job seeker what are you doing to increase you chances of being hired?

Based on the response from professionals like yourself, we know you’re searching on places like Indeed, Monster, and CareerBuilder. Pro-Tem Solutions also uses those websites as well as Twitter and LinkedIn group to feed our jobs. It’s important for job seekers to use these resources to get to know–potential employers–companies. Follow them on Twitter, join their LinkedIn group, or find them on Facebook, more often than not they will have these pages set up and they want you to see them.  It’s one of the easiest ways to research a company before you get an interview or decide to work for them.

No matter what the economy is like, don’t forget to set up a professional e-mail. E-mails like sexykitten don’t fly and are turn offs to a recruiter reviewing your resume. Social media is your friend, but if you’re Facebook page has pictures of you downing a glass of beer… It’s definitely part of the reason you’re not getting hired. Be conscious of your online presence, it may be the difference between getting the job and unemployment.

Once you are offered the job, and they tell you what your salary will be it’s important to look at the opportunities the job offers. People say they don’t care about the money, but money sure can pay our bills and we don’t want to behind on our payments! As a result, salary is important to everybody in one way or another.

There are a few questions you should ask yourself when you’re getting job offers

  • What are other professionals making in that area?
  • Are there opportunities for upward mobility?
  • How is the commute? Is it close to home?

Recruiters may be able to help you get the salary you are looking for, You also want to be careful not to out price yourself. When you’re discussing salary with the recruiter don’t forget to be realistic. There are websites that can tell you how much similar jobs pay. I tried it out some of those websites. I found that some websites asked me to sign up before they can tell me the results. Rather than get E-mails from those websites, you are better off asking the recruiter who is working with you. They specialize in placing people, and may be able to help you negotiate if it’s possible.
